MEDICAL OPINION

BARIATRIC SURGERY: WHY VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS? AND WHICH?

“On a daily basis, people are faced with basic micro and macronutrient needs for their day-to-day, which come mainly from their healthy diet. In patients suffering from obesity, in particular extreme obesity (BMI>40 kg/m2), severe micronutrient deficiencies are already documented. This seems like a paradox, but the consumption of excess calories is not directly linked to the greater consumption of foods with high nutritional quality, on the contrary, it is more linked to the intake of foods with high calorie power and little nutrition, increased adiposity conditions serum levels. of some fat-soluble vitamins and probably in appetite regulation mechanisms. Thus, it is common to find deficits in Vitamins D, A, B12, C, E, Zinc and Iron in obese patients”.
